The Desert Rats Memorial in Thetford, England, is a significant memorial dedicated to the brave soldiers of the 7th Armoured Division, also known as the "Desert Rats". 7th Armoured Division memorial

The 7th Armoured Division was established in 1938 and played a key role in the battles against the Axis powers. Their most famous campaign was their participation in the battles in the North African desert, especially the famous Battle of El Alamein, which was a turning point in the war. Later, the Desert Rats also fought in Italy, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Germany, contributing to the liberation of Europe in 1945.

Desert Rats remembrance events

The memorial consists of a large granite stone with a bronze plaque honoring the history and achievements of the 7th Armoured Division. A special feature of the memorial is a life-size statue of a soldier standing at attention, symbolizing the determination and courage of the Desert Rats. Surrounding the monument are additional plaques commemorating the various regiments and battalions of the division.

A very sobering reminder of the sheer determination and sacrifice of our men during WW2. The tank has been very recently refurbished and looks amazing on its plinth, and the plaque is very informative. Well worth a stop if you're passing by, or if you like your military history like me.
